Creating Intentional Support for Educators with Lesley University

Educators are facing a loneliness crisis.

Many educators are managing challenging student behavior with little support or seeing individual students throughout the day. Others might be the only person who has their role in their school or district. It can feel like there’s no one to brainstorm with or lean on.

Dr. MC was invited to develop and lead a Community of Practice for Experienced Educators to help meet some of that need for more connection. Educators met virtually to problem-solve real classroom issues and build intentional community beyond the school year.

This Community of Practice was part of Lesley University’s inaugural Professional Learning Network, continuing education programs designed to help professionals – not just alums – stay at the forefront of teaching and learning. Theresa received her doctorate at Lesley.

Throughout the four-part series, participants focused on a guiding question: How do we create school environments where everyone, no matter their background, feels safe, seen, and truly belongs?

Together, the group discussed goals and challenges, with Dr. MC helping participants identify strategies to improve their day-to-day, trauma-sensitive approach. Participants who attended all four sessions and completed an extra assignment earned Professional Development Points (PDPs).

Here are some of educators’ takeaways:

✨”This PLN helped me reconnect with the importance of seeing the whole child, not just the student in front of the work.”

✨”I’ve become more intentional about creating a space where mistakes are okay and where students feel supported instead of judged.”

✨”I really enjoyed learning about how to use unconditional positive regard in teaching and learned ways in which I can be more consistent in my practices.”

✨”Hearing other educators reflect on how they support their students, build relationships, and make time for play and mindfulness has been instrumental in how I navigate my classroom.”

Thanks to all who participated, Lesley University for bringing this opportunity to educators, and to the guest speakers who joined the cohort.
