Let’s rewind to 2011, I found myself in a wonderful job where I was working with special education high school students in a therapeutic setting. Many of these students had experienced traumatic pasts and had a variety of social-emotional and mental health needs. Being a helping professional, I wanted to give all that I could to these students, and I did, but in the process of doing so, I neglected my own well-being. This is likely the case for many of us. We are eager to help others, and we want to take care of others…but why don’t we take care of ourselves too?
I quickly realized that I would need to acquire some skills to be better equipped at my job. I turned to the teachings of Dr. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Kabat-Zinn, and Dr. Wayne Dyer initially and began my journey into learning about self-care. Since that time, I have dramatically increased my expertise, deepened my practice, and broadened my understanding of self-care.
I recently graduated with my PhD in Educational Leadership and my area of scholarship was self-care and renewal for leaders and teachers. This research further ignited my desire to help others with self-care and inspired the creation of “Dr. MC’s Self-Care Cabaret.” The name perfectly combines my past theatre and performing experiences with my passion for self-care. Sharing my knowledge in this capacity feels like performing and I am most comfortable when I have an audience.
Since launching the Self-Care Cabaret, I have had many opportunities to share my expertise at various conferences around New England and I have been blessed with writing opportunities as well.
I very much look forward to sharing more with you and having you on this journey with me.
Past Performing Highlights – Theatre & Film
I am no stranger to the spotlight. Long before becoming Dr. MC, I trained professionally as a dancer at prestigious schools such as Boston Ballet and José Mateo’s Ballet Theatre of Boston. Discovering I was a triple threat, I expanded my ballet training into the world of musical theatre where I earned professional acting and choreography accolades. I have had the privilege to train with some of the most talented dancers and choreographers such as Mia Michaels, Brian Friedman, Wade Robson, Michelle Dorrance, Jason Samuels Smith, and more in both Boston & New York City. I can even be seen on the big screen having roles in several Hollywood feature films, local commercials, and even a music video. Even though I may not be currently performing, I take the experiences and skills with me into the “Self-Care Cabaret” adding a touch of Broadway wherever I go!
